Today A Course in Miracles reminds us of the link between forgiveness and joy. Through forgiveness, we will attain happiness unlike any we have ever experienced.
Forgiveness is the key to happiness.
The Course instructs us to meditate once in the morning and once at night for ten minutes, visualizing someone whom we consider an "enemy" and someone we consider a friend. We are told to look deep within our supposed enemy for the presence of Light. When we find it, we are to imagine that light filling them up, expanding until it surrounds him/her. With our friend, we are to picture that same Light within them, growing until they appear as more than our friend in the vision we hold. What our enemy and friend alike become are our saviors. They then share their light with us, as we, too, join them in glowing ever-brighter from within.
What this exercise teaches us is that through forgiveness we are able to See our friends, along with those whom we perceive to be our enemies, One with ourselves in Light.
There is Light within all of us, though at some times it may be difficult to find. When someone who crosses your path rubs you the wrong way, see the situation as an opportunity to find the light within them. This can be a challenge, but it also offers you a gift which your otherwise lingering frustration will not: Happiness.
There will come a day when forgiveness is no longer necessary, when we no longer see one another as separate from one another, when we will no longer harm one another for the knowledge and true understanding that in doing so we only harm ourselves. There will come a day when all we perceive is Love, for we will all know that Love is all there really is. There will come a day when endless Joy and Peace is all we will experience, in the multitude of forms in which they come, and we will share them gladly with our Brothers and Sisters as they share theirs with us.
Until that day, we must forgive. We must do this freely, we must do this consistently, and we must do this truly, as long as there exists in our world the dark shadows which we have dreamt up in our false way of thinking. Forgiveness will unleash the Truth, and it will spread like wildfire across every mind in every corner of the earth, shining away the darkness with incredible ease and incredible power. And what will be left in its place is Pure Joy.
It begins with you. Learn to see your enemies and your friends in the same Magnificent Light. Learn to see yourself in that Light with them. By your learning, you will teach others to do the same, and we will behold that Glorious Day when all fear has been extinguished and our world is restored to its Heavenly state.
Until tomorrow,

Day 120: Review - Lessons 109 & 110
Today marks the end of the third review section in A Course in Miracles. Here are the links to my previous posts for the lessons we are revisiting today:
Day 109: I rest in God.
Day 110: I am as God created me.
What comes to mind when you think of the word "rest"? I first think of sleep. Then I think of peace. Then I think of dreams, of rejuvenation, of comfort and security. When we are experiencing these states-of-being, we are in alignment with God. The act of resting, then, in and of itself is a Godly act.
When we are at rest, we are not only with God, we are in God, as lesson 109 points out. What this implies is that God is all around us. God encompasses all that is, all that ever was, and all there will be. So does that mean God is also in the hunger, in the poverty and the war that rages in our world? Though God did not create these things, He is present within them. These dark forces are of our own making, but the good news is that they do not really exist. Where God comes into play is in the possibilities these illusions hold. For instance, the possibilities that have arisen as a result of hunger may be that we will learn to share, that out of such a devastation we will learn to cultivate the earth harmoniously in order to yield more than enough food for everyone on the planet. These gems within the shadows of our world mark the road to our salvation. In Truth, these shadows do not exist, but because we have made them, God has made Himself known in their midst in order to set us back on track.
Just as we are always within God, we have also remained pure and holy as He created us. Any guilt, shame, or other variations of of fear we may feel are simply not real. That's not to diminish how real they may feel at the moment, but when we are awakened to the Truth of our being, such feelings will have no weight, for they cannot exist in Light.
We are Light. We are beautiful bending beams of Light. As God is Light, and we rest in God, we must then be Light as well. When we leave the physical world, we return our full awareness to this essence, but it still remains there throughout our lives. We are, each one of us, as God created us, and God created us as Light.
I leave you this evening with a poem I wrote a couple years ago, a discovery I made (or a reminder I awoke to) on a particularly romantic autumn evening. I hope you will enjoy it.

We are all, each one of us,
Beams of Light, bending
To and fro
Along the wavelength
Pathways of our lives.
As our beams cross another's,
The Light brightens
At the intersection.
For some, the moment occurs only Once...
A thing to be cherished.
For others, the two cross repeatedly,
But only for a time...
Yielding lessons to be learned.
For still others, the light beams weave into one another for Eternity...
A perfect Harmony.
This is the Way of the Universe.
This is the Map of Love.
This is the Journey of the Soul...
Until tomorrow,

Day 119: Review - Lessons 107 & 108
Day 107: Truth will correct all errors in my mind.
Day 108: To give and to receive are one in truth.
Piggybacking on one of the ideas we reviewed yesterday, Let me be still and listen to the truth, we are reminded today that when we take a moment to be calm, to stop the mad thoughts of our minds and be still, we are in a position to allow our way of thinking to be corrected. We are in the position to realign ourselves with Truth and our Creator.
Through stillness, we will find Truth, and through Truth, we will heal our minds. Furthermore, when we give ourselves the space to be at peace, we will receive Peace. Peace is a correcting power. In Peace, the errors in our minds will be healed.
Have I lost you yet? Let's simplify:
Stillness = Peace = Truth = Healing/Correction
Giving Stillness (to ourselves) = Receiving Peace (for ourselves) = finding Truth = Healing/Correction
Healing our minds, of course, is the process of our own salvation. By doing so, we inevitably help others to heal their way of thinking. By residing in Peace, we give Peace. In giving Peace, we receive Peace, for giving and receiving are the same.
Let's get a little less theoretical and a little more "real" so we can truly understand these concepts:
Today was a rough day for me. It was a rough day, yet a glorious day. (I'm beginning to sound like Charles Dickens - "It was the best of times. It was the worst of times.") All day I had been hopeful that I would be called back for a role on a television show (did I ever mention that I am an actor?), and for the past several months, my financial security has become less and less... well, secure. As a result, I have been relying on administrative temp work, which has been very minimal. Today, however, I booked a role - not the role I'd been gunning for on TV, but the role of "Receptionist" at an office an hour away with artificial lighting and no windows and a computer keyboard with a jammed letter "A" - a aaaaa aaaaaaaaaaaaa aaaa.
And that's exactly how I was feeling inside: "Aaaaaaaaaaaaa!" The angst of waiting for that phone call from my agent or manager about the acting job was excruciating, and during lunch, I finally decided that I just needed to surrender it. I gave it my all at the audition. I know I'm good, and I performed the role well, but the fact that I hadn't heard anything yet meant the chances I landed a callback were dwindling fast. I had to let it go.
Much easier said than done. I returned after lunch to my creatively-defunct office job, and by the end of the day, I knew that if I hadn't gotten a call yet, it wasn't going to happen. When I got home, I broke down. "Why," I said to my partner, "after all this hard work I'm putting into what I really love to do, am I still finding myself working in an office? Why am I going broke when I know I have the skill to really excel at what I've been put on earth for? - to act, to write, to teach." While I let it all out, he just listened and held me close. And in that stillness, I heard the Truth. As I gave myself over to God and acknowledged the hurt I was feeling in that moment, the answer came to me: The office work I've recently been doing is temporary. The effort I've been putting into my acting and writing and teaching aspirations, though results may not yet be apparent, has not been all for naught. Giving and receiving are the same. I will receive back that which I put out into the world. The error in my mind in that moment was the belief that I wouldn't.
In the stillness, which I was only able to achieve after acknowledging my sorrow and moving through it (as opposed to avoiding it), I was able to See. I was able to recognize that over the last six months, I have been setting myself up to live my dreams, when prior to that I wasn't. Prior to that, I was working full-time in an office position (which was not temp work), in order to have the financial security I desired. I left this position because I wasn't happy. Though I had money, I was not rich, for what good is money when you don't have happiness? So I decided to leave my job and focus solely on my creative work.
What I realized tonight is that this shift in my life will require time in order for my dreams and aspirations to manifest. I need to travel through the darkness, the falsehoods I was living previously, in order to reach the Truth. I'm already doing what I need to do. I've already made the shift to live my life the way I really want to live it. But it will take some time for the world around me to catch up, to reflect that inner shift. It will take some time before I reach the destination along the path I have set myself on. The more focused and vigilant I remain on this path, the more I set into motion the great things which will occur. The reward is on its way...
There is a prize out there for each and every one of us, awaiting to be given as long as we are open to receiving it. Some of us are on our way to realizing our greatest dreams, already following the path of our truth. Some of us have veered off track, but our prize is still there, simply waiting until we change course.
If you are not joyful, if you are not at peace, if you find yourself restricted and unable to extend love to others; then you may need to make a shift in your life. Start by giving yourself the space to be still. The Truth will address all your woes, and you will know which new direction you are to take. Stay the course. Don't give up. It is necessary to travel through the darkness we have made in order to reach the Light. As long as we stay on track, we will change the course of our lives. We will receive all that we have given. And we will reside in Peace, in Joy and in Love for eternity.
Godspeed to you on your own journey. May you be blessed with Vision and guided by Light.

Day 118: Review - Lessons 105 & 106
Here are the links to my blog posts for the lessons we are reviewing today:
Day 105: God's peace and joy are mine.
Day 106: Let me be still and listen to the truth.
How many times have you heard, "Take a deep breath" when someone is advising you to calm down? There's a reason for this. Taking a breath gives us a moment of pause. It is a temporary distraction from our life's distractions. In actuality, taking that moment just to take in some air is not a distraction at all, but a brief return to Truth. It allows us to regain our senses, for in the heat of our life's distractions, we have circumvented the truth and become caught up in the illusions of our physical lives.
By simply breathing in an out for just a minute, or just a few seconds even, we become still. And it is in this stillness that we are able to listen to the Truth.
The Truth of our being, of course, is that we are extensions of God. We are creative beings, endowed with the ability to create by our own One Creator. As we are inevitably and infinitely connected to our Creator, whatever He experiences, so shall we. But we must be open to it. Since we are creative beings ourselves and have been given free will by God, we have the choice to remain in alignment to receive His Gifts or to shun them and follow a darker path.
Choosing to go down the dim road is a decision to live in illusion, for by doing so we are ignoring Who We Really Are. We are stepping out of True Reality when we decide to turn our backs on our inner-light and the Light of Origin which created us. But no matter how determined we are to look away and deny its existence, the Light is still there.
In the midst of the Light there is Joy and Peace, for there is only Love. Remember, we are extensions of God, so what is His is ours. All we need to do to experience this truth is stop looking away.
This may not always seem to be the case. Tragedy in this world can appear so overbearing, so all-encompassing, that we sometimes see no way out. But this is where stillness is so crucial. No matter where we are, no matter what situation we find ourselves, we can always stop, close our eyes, and take a deep breath to realign ourselves with the peace and joy and light residing within. Nothing - no person and no circumstance - can take that away from us. This is the infallible perfection of God's design. This is our True Home. And like Dorothy clicking her heels, we can take a moment, take a breath, and return Home to the loving arms of our Creator whenever we choose.
So breathe with me...

Day 117: Review - Lessons 103 & 104
Day 103: God, being Love, is also happiness.
Day 104: I seek but what belongs to me in truth.
God is Love. I'm sure most of us have heard this at one point or another. You're probably also familiar with the phrase "love hurts" (and the hit song performed by Nazareth which made it popular). If Love is also happiness, how can it hurt?
The only reason we have to believe love hurts is if we perceive it as temporary. But True Love does not come and go. True Love is timeless, as is God. Yet this is a difficult concept for us to grasp, since the world in which we live operates along the construct of time.
Time, as Einstein concluded in his later years, does not really exist. He theorized that the past, present and future all occur simultaneously. Indeed, this is the case, yet on the material plane of existence this is near impossible for us to understand.
Have you ever had a moment so joyful, so other-worldly, so beyond anything you could have ever comprehended that it appeared time had stopped altogether? This is a semblance of what True Love is like.
Think about our memories. When we reflect upon them, they can seem almost as real as if we were there. The emotions we feel when thinking about them can be just as powerful as they were when we were actually in that moment. Sometimes it pains us to look back on the joyful and loving experiences in our lives, but it only does so because we perceive them to be lost to us. But consider this: How can these cherished times be lost if we are able to reflect on them whenever we so choose? This is proof that the Joy and Love we share during the course of our lives is kept in trust for us. We can access these happy experiences whenever we want to.
Of course, we cannot re-experience these moments to their full extent while we are still on earth creating new ones. Our purpose on this planet is to "collect" as many pearls of Joy that we possibly can. How could this be so if all we did was reminisce about moments that have passed? Inevitably, what results is a false impression that "love hurts." But if we knew the Truth - that the Joy and Love we felt has never actually left us to begin with, that our souls reside in a timeless Kingdom alongside our Creator - we would no longer experience the pain of the loss which we perceive. We would rejoice knowing that all good things await us when we return to our Heavenly state.
This, I believe, is what it means to "seek but what belongs to me in truth." Let us love freely, live joyously, and strive to find the wonder in every moment of our lives, for these are the moments that are retained for us in Light. These are the moments by which we bless others by sharing our God-given happiness. Do not be afraid of the "hurt" that seems to accompany love, for that will fade away with time, and only the timeless will remain. What is left is pure Love, and with it, Joy, for these gifts rest in a far more Real place than this material world.

Day 116: Review - Lessons 101 & 102
Here are the links to my previous posts for lessons 101 and 102 in A Course in Miracles:
Day 101: God's Will for me is perfect happiness.
Day 102: I share God's Will for happiness for me.
We are not meant to experience the traumas, the catastrophes, the sorrow and the pain that seem to be of daily occurrence on this planet. We are meant to be joyful all the time. That is God's Will. Our purpose on earth is to experience happiness in as many different ways as we possibly can. We are all tied to one another, and all of us are tied to our Creator. It is through our happy moments that God experiences joy, for we are but extensions of Him. Happiness is our birthright.
By sharing this will to be happy, by simply making the choice and determination to lead a happy life, we are putting ourselves into alignment with God and all of His creations.
Does this mean that there won't be difficulty, that we won't experience sadness from time to time? Absolutely not. We are at a stage of development where we are still very much "in the dark." Our entire global society needs to shift before Heaven will reign on earth. But it begins with us, and with our simple determination to look on the bright side.
This is literally what we are doing when we decide to lead a happy life - "look on the bright side." We are choosing to See, past the dark figures our egos and thoughts of separation have fabricated, and into the Light beyond. We are turning away from our shadows and facing the Light which has been shining upon our backs this whole time. All we need to do is turn around. And we do this my making the choice to turn our way of thinking around.
As difficult as it is at first to accept that we were created to be happy all the time, let us just imagine what kind of world we would have if there were no more violent crimes, no more war, no more devastation, and no more sickness... The fact that we can imagine it is proof that it is possible. That is the kind of world God intended for us to inhabit. That is the world we can have if we make the choice to share His Will of perfect Joy for us. Let us begin by simply turning around and looking on the bright side.

Until tomorrow,

Day 115: Review - Lessons 99 & 100
Day 99: Salvation is my only function here.
Day 100: My part is essential to God's plan for salvation.
We have but one function here, though the forms it takes are countless. That function is salvation. We achieve salvation through our recognition that We are All One. Through this awareness, we are able to forgive. To forgive is to be joyous, and to be joyous is to be at peace.
The role we each play is unique in God's master plan to save our world. The circumstances in which we find ourselves are no accident. It is all part of the Great Design. In every situation, we are presented with an opportunity to practice our function of salvation; we are given the opportunity to see past whatever the initial circumstance conveys and to forgive, be joyful, and see ourselves in the other.
Though we may sometimes feel that we don't matter - that our existence has no bearing on the fate of the world - we couldn't be farther from the truth. Each one of us impacts every other person on the planet. Every interaction with have with another, no matter how minute it may seem, has a reaction. This is how energy works, and we are but units of energy at the end of the day. Potential energy becomes kinetic energy. Kinetic energy changes form. Every action has a reaction. And even when we don't interact with another human being, our presence on the earth alone creates a shift. Our thoughts have power. Our thoughts have a frequency. They have the ability to literally alter the composition of matter. Marianne Williamson says frequently in her lectures, "Every thought creates form on some level." Even if you are a hermit who hasn't had contact with another living thing since the day you were born, the fact that you are thinking means that you are changing the world.
Our presence is essential to the salvation of our planet. This is why it is of vital importance that we all wake up! We must align ourselves with God-Consciousness if we are to ever see the world be saved. This is why we are here. It is the only reason. What brings us True Joy and True Peace is in line with our function of salvation, so this is not meant to be a chore. It simply starts with an awareness. Once we understand and accept our sole function, everything else will begin to fall into place. We will start to recognize our Oneness - our harmony with all other living beings on this planet and beyond. Through this recognition we will forgive, and we will experience Joy and Peace like we never imagined possible. This is the pathway to our salvation. Let us not tarry any longer.
